Airports to ferry 82.7m passengers

A CHINESE traveler on flight MU587 from the Pudong International Airport to New York yesterday became the 80 millionth passenger to traverse through the city’s two airports this year.

Over 82.7 million people are expected to pass through the city’s two main airports — Pudong and Hongqiao — this year, making Shanghai the world’s seventh city with over 80 million air passengers after London, New York, Tokyo, Atlanta, Paris and Beijing.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport will build two satellite terminals next year, increasing its capacity by 75 percent. The satellite terminals — S1 and S2 — will have a total of 105 gates and will share the burden with the current 70 gates of T1 and T2.

The two terminals in the Pudong airport currently ferry about 40 million passengers every year. The figure will go up to 70 million after S1 and S2 become operational.

The shuttle buses that carry passengers from terminals to the aircraft will also be done away with. The airport authorities have yet to decide whether to transfer customers from the main terminals to the satellites through an underground subway or APM — automated people mover system.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport will also reshape its Terminal 1 next year, raising T1’s capacity from 20 million people to 36.8 million.
