Approval for Metro Line 11 extension
SHANGHAI is to begin construction of a Metro line connecting coastal Lingang New City in suburban Nanhui District to the downtown area this year.
The city's Metro construction authority said yesterday that it had received central government approval for the southern extension project for Metro Line 11.
The first phase of Line 11, running from Jiading District in the northwest of the city to Pudong in the southeast, will begin operating this year.
When it goes into service in 2012, the southern line, with trains running up to 120 kilometers per hour, will cut traveling time from Lingang New City to Pudong's Longyang Road to half an hour, Metro authorities said.
The extension will help the city boost its shipping industry and attract more people to live and work in the residential town, the authority said.
Lingang New City is part of Shanghai's Yangshan Deep-Water Port project, located off the city's southern coast in Hangzhou Bay.
The huge project is designed to make Shanghai one of the busiest shipping centers in the world.
The southern line will run for 59 kilometers through Pudong, with 11 stations. It will share stations with five other Metro lines.
Shanghai will have a Metro network of 500 kilometers and nearly 350 stations by 2012.
The first phase of Line 11's northern section is due to be complete before the end of the year, the Metro authority said.
