Apres le deluge, here is the sun
RESIDENTS will bask in summer-like weather as temperatures are expected to soar to 30 degrees Celsius this week.
Furthermore, it is “very likely” the city will officially enter summer this week, forecasters said.
It wouldn’t have seemed so likely yesterday though.
The city shivered on a grey and wet Monday with temperatures under 19 degrees. The rains, however, did help to wash out the dust brought in by a sandstorm from the north that swept through the city over the weekend.
Air quality will be fine today and tomorrow, according to the environment monitoring center.
Sunshine will return today and the mercury will start to climb, rising to 25 degrees. It will touch 29 degrees tomorrow and 31 degrees on Thursday, Shanghai Meterological Bureau said.
Low pressure is the order of the day on Thursday, bringing showers at night. On Friday the high will drop to 26 degrees. Saturday will be sunny with the temperature reaching 29 degrees, forecasters said.
Last Friday marked lixia in the lunar calendar, a solar term referring to the beginning of summer in Chinese tradition. But meteorologically, the start of summer requires five consecutive days with average temperatures above 22 degrees after lixia.
Records from 1981 to 2016 show that on average Shanghai enters summer around May 28. The earliest summer was on May 6, 2009, and the latest was on June 24, 1995.
If Shanghai does officially enter summer this week, then this spring will have lasted only one and a half months — which would make it the third shortest spring on the record, following 43 days in 1933 and 44 days in 1991.
