Aquatic market in Putuo to be demolished at end of October

THE aquatic product market on Tongchuan Road in Putuo District will be shut down in October, Wenhui Daily reported today.

Some stalls were already closed and other illegal structures stretching 1,000 square meters were demolished.

The market will be reconstructed as a greenbelt to cool the city and clean the air.

Built in 1996, the aquatic product market was the largest in Shanghai.

The stalls will be relocated to other markets. Local administration said 1,649 stalls, or 80 percent of them had signed up for relocation. The local government returned three months’ rent and offered other incentives to encourage them to move ahead of schedule.
