Area to regain old look
A cluster of warehouses and banks along the Suzhou Creek, industrial heritages of the 1920s, are expected to regain their original look and get new life as an entertainment venue, local authorities said yesterday.
The 17 old buildings, including the former China Bank, mainly located along the north bank of the Suzhou Creek, will be repaired and restored to their old appearance. Some newly built structures will be redone to look old, said Cao Liqiang, vice governor of Putuo District.
The renovations will begin after the Shanghai World Expo ends on October 31.
High-end office buildings will stand beside the old architecture, Cao said.
Within the 3.19-square-kilometer area, more shopping venues and residences will be built in the middle belt of the area.
About 4,000 families will be relocated to make room for the area's future blueprint.
