Authorities crack down on airport cabbies' scam
TAXI-SERVICE managers at Pudong International Airport have accused some cabbies and passengers of cheating over business incentives and discounts.
Taxi managers at the airport launched an incentive policy to help passengers heading for Chuansha Town and other places close to the terminal because cabbies would rather pick up passengers wanting to go to downtown districts which meant considerably higher fares.
Passengers wanting to go to Chuansha Town were frequently rejected as cabbies faced another long wait in the queue at the airport when they returned from a trip which might just earn them a few yuan.
To help passengers, the taxi coordinators began to encourage cabbies to drive to Chuansha by reducing their need to queue.
"The taxi manager gives a note to each driver assigned for a ride to Chuansha. With this note they don't need to line up again when they drive back to the airport. But they must get back within an hour with the note," said an airport official.
Increasing
Drivers can often spend three to four hours waiting in line before picking up passengers at the airport.
But now an increasing number of Chinese passengers were calling the airport taxi administrators asking for taxis to Chuansha.
"The fact is some of them are just lying. They are usually heading for more distant spots. But the cabbies are pleased to get the note with their help and they are willing to grant a fares discount. Negotiation usually takes place after the cars drive out of the taxi stand," said a taxi coordinator.
But as cabbies have to obey the "one-hour'' rule, they may have to drive too fast to get back to the airport in time. This increases the chance of accidents, the taxi managers said.
Since the deals are only between passengers and cabbies, it's difficult for managers at the taxi stand to clamp down on the practice.
But now they are on the alert when responding to passenger calls.
"We will require passengers to detail the address in Chuansha Town and reject those who are obviously at a loss about where they are heading for inside Chuansha," said a taxi coordinator.
