Bags of sand used to test new Metro line
BAGS of "rice" were seen piled up in a train on Metro Line 16 yesterday afternoon and the photos sparked a controversy on the Internet.
Shanghai Metro operator said today the train was undergoing a loading test and the bags were filled with sand, not rice, according to a report on www.eastday.com.
After a series of testing and staff training, Metro Line 16 will start its trial run in the second half of this year, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said.
The 59-kilometer urban rail has three underground stations and nine ground stations. It links Longyang Road in Pudong with the seaside town of Lingang in the southeastern tip of Shanghai.
New trains have rows of seats like normal passenger trains. Eventually, Metro Line 16 will have 23 pairs of trains.
