Baoshan set to open cruise terminal
AN international passenger liner will dock in Shanghai tomorrow to christen Wusong International Cruise Ship Terminal.
The terminal opens in Baoshan District's Wusong port area where the Huangpu River meets the Yangtze River and the East China Sea.
The terminal plans to be the city's second port for international liners. It is also expected to serve as a "gateway" for visitors to the Shanghai World Expo that opens this Saturday, district officials said.
By 2015, the cruise ship terminal is expected to handle 560,000 passengers annually although its design capacity is 608,000 a year. The district invested more than 1.2 billion yuan (US$176 million) in the project, which has two phases.
The first phase includes two berths, a terminal building, a custom platform and an approach bridge, said the builder, the No. 2 Engineering Co of China Communications Construction Third Harbor Engineering Co.
A 100,000-ton liner and a 200,000-ton ship will be able to dock simultaneously.
Another two berths will be added by 2012 in the second phase of construction, authorities said.
The design of the terminal building, dubbed "the eye of the Yangtze River," was inspired by a seashell.
District government officials said up to 3,200 passengers can clear customs within two hours at the terminal.
The new terminal will also have ferry and bus links to downtown. Visitors can also take ferries along the Huangpu River to the Expo site.
Baoshan also plans to build a wetland park beside the new terminal and a technology museum near the mouth of the Yangtze River.
