'Black cab' driver held after traffic cop is hit

A DRIVER of a "black taxi" who hit and rolled over a police assistant early Tuesday morning in suburban Jiading District while trying to avoid a spot check has been detained, Shanghai police said last night.

The injured assistant Wu Jianzhong sustained a serious brainstem injury when the suspect surnamed Lai was driving backwards to escape, police said.

Wu was being treated at Changzheng Hospital, police added.

Lai confessed yesterday that he purchased the taxi in "an illegal way" and the case was still under investigation last night, police said.

The incident happened about 1:20am on Chengzhong Road near Shaxia Road, when traffic police were checking taxis with a traffic law enforcement team in a campaign to crackdown on illegal operations.

Lai's car was stopped by officers for a regular check. When the officers and assistants approached the vehicle, Lai suddenly drove backwards to escape. Wu, who was behind Lai's car, was knocked to the ground.

Lai did not stop and rolled over Wu to escape the scene, according to surveillance camera footage provided by the police yesterday.

Lai was caught by backup police officers 10 minutes later on Jiaxin Road near Shenyu Road.

Police said Lai's car had the exact same license plate number of a licensed taxi.
