Blue alert: bad air with short-time heavy pollution likely in next 24 hours for city

THE city’s first blue alert for major air pollution has come just two days after its refined local pollution alarm system came into effect on Wednesday. The latest blue alert means the city will remain smog-shrouded for the next 24 hours with likely short-time heavy air pollution.

The Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau issued the blue alert on 11am today, reminding children, seniors and people suffering from heart disease, lung disease and other chronic diseases to stay indoors.

Previously, the blue alarm was issued only under the condition when the Air Quality Index (AQI) was forecast to be between 201 and 300 over the next 24 hours, indicating bad air quality. The reformed four-tier pollution alarm system says when the AQI index stays between 151 and 200, suggesting moderate pollution, with short-time severe pollution within 24 hours also predicted, the blue alarm should also be issued to keep people prepared for upcoming heavy smog.

The environment authority said northwest wind has sent a wave of pollutants to Shanghai, pushing up the air quality index, which had stood above 200 since 7am today.

When the city is under blue alert for pollution, local construction sites will be ordered to suspend outdoor operations. Heavy industry factories, especially those discharging large amounts of volatile organic compounds, will be required to reduce waste discharge.
