Boat Accidents Up
TRAFFIC accidents on city waters more than doubled in the first half of this year, Shanghai maritime authorities said yesterday, but the death toll declined.
Authorities reported 34 accidents from January to June, a 112.5 percent increase over last year. Chen Xiaoguang, deputy director of the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, said "crews' poor operation skills and lax supervision" were mainly to blame.
Bad weather also contributed to the rise.
In the first six months of this year, 10 vessels sank, four more than last year. The economic loss from the accidents amounted to more than 140 million yuan (US$21.7 million), five times that of last year.
