Brace for autumn chill, poor air quality

A COLD front from north China means that the city will struggle with poor air quality for several more days, forecasters said yesterday.

The Air Pollution Index briefly touched 118 yesterday morning with the dangerous PM2.5 particles the main pollutants.

“Shanghai will be affected by the cold front next week and short periods of air pollution is possible,” said Wang Qian of the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The cold front will also bring down the temperature and may officially usher in autumn.

Autumn usually sets in Shanghai in early October with the average temperature below 22 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days.

“It is very likely that Shanghai will welcome autumn in the meteorological term over the weekend,” said Wu Rui, a chief service officer at the weather bureau.

Mornings and nights will be cool but the days will be cloudy or sunny for the next five days due to the high atmospheric pressure.

The temperature will drop to 14 degrees Celsius at night in downtown.

It should be cloudy today with a high of 23 degrees and a low of 16. Light haze is forecast before noon. The mercury will drop to a low of 14 degrees and the high will 21 degrees tomorrow.

Monday will be 23 degrees with sunny and cloudy skies. On Tuesday, the temperature will hover between 15 and 24 degrees. It will drop to 14 degrees on Wednesday.
