Brace for sunny but chilly weekend

Forecasters are predicting a sunny but chilly weekend with lows of minus 2 degree Celsius in downtown today, while poor air conditions are expected to drive up the density of pollutants, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said.
The air quality index is expected to be 110 to 130, or lightly polluted, in the morning and drop to 95 to 115 in the afternoon, making for a good to slightly polluted air quality, the center said.
PM2.5 will be the main pollutant. It refers to airborne particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter.
They are the main cause of urban smog and can cause heart and lung problems.
Meanwhile, the air quality improved yesterday as a cold front helped reduce pollutants.
AQI was 75 at 5pm yesterday. The level of PM2.5 dropped to 56.5 micrograms per cubic meter at the same time, according to the center.
It was also the chilliest morning yesterday after winter began with a minus 1.1 degrees reading in Xujiahui, where the high was only 3.4 degrees.
Chongming Island recorded minus 2.6 degrees in the morning, the lowest among all districts, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
Mercury in downtown areas should drop further to a low of minus 2 degrees with thin ice because of the cold front.
It will likely touch minus 4 in suburban areas, according to Man Liping, a chief service officer at the bureau.
The temperature should hover between minus 2 to 5 degrees for much of the day.
It should be sunny and cloudy tomorrow with both the low and high rising 1 degree.
From Monday onwards, the mercury will rise gradually to above 10 degrees Celsius.
New Year’s Eve should be sunny and cloudy with the high temperature at 12 degrees and a low of 1 degree.
The first day of the New Year on Wednesday will also be sunny and cloudy with temperatures peaking at 12 degrees.
