Break from showers as mercury rises
IT will be cloudy today as the mercury bounces back to 26 degrees Celsius, forecasters said.
However, the rain will return tomorrow and continue through Saturday. Sunday will be cloudy with a high of 27 degrees.
After two yellow alerts for lightning and rainstorms issued at 9:50pm and 11:55pm on Tuesday night, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau upgraded the alert to orange — the second-highest in a four-color system — at 5:19am yesterday morning. It was the city’s first orange rainstorm alert this year, the bureau said.
Suburban Chongming County, Jinshan, Fengxian districts and part of Qingpu District saw the worst of it with precipitation of 50 to 100 millimeters, but the majority of the city saw rainfall of between 25 and 50 millimeters.
Flooding caused by the storm was not serious or widespread, affecting only a few streets, but local authorities dispatched pump trucks to key areas such as underpasses just in case.
The stormy weather affected some flights at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. By 8am yesterday morning, 15 flights scheduled to arrive at Pudong airport were redirected to Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport or other neighboring airports.
Some trains were also delayed.
