Break out umbrella, coat: Rain, chill return

TODAY should be warm enough to be pleasant again in Shanghai but a chill is expected to return tonight, and the week will start with some drizzles, forecasters said.

There is an increased chance of rain today and tomorrow, with the precipitation tapering off after that, according to the Shanghai Observatory.

The high should drop to 6 degrees Celsius tomorrow.

"The warm and wet stream should remain active on January 21 and 22 and the city should experience some drizzles," said Zhu Jiehua, a chief service officer of the observatory.

"The weather should turn clear, mostly sunny to partly cloudy starting on Wednesday, with the expansion of cold from the north."

While today's forecast calls for a low of 7 degrees Celsius and a high of 11, the lows are expected to fall to 2 to 4 degrees from tomorrow until Thursday. The low should drop to around 1 degree Celsius on Friday.

Yesterday was dahan, or "great cold," on the Chinese lunar calendar, the coldest part of the year. Still, Shanghai did not feel very cold yesterday as the high climbed to 13 degrees Celsius in the afternoon thanks to warm and humid air.
