Bridge not too far off reopening

ZHEJIANG Road Bridge, which has been closed for repair since April, is scheduled to reopen to traffic before the end of the year, the Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said yesterday.

A program to renovate the 107-year-old span is nearing completion, with the final stages being the laying of a new road surface and the installation of a lighting system.

The bridge was lifted from its stanchions in April and taken for repair, before being reinstated in October.

The bureau declined to give a precise date for its reopening, but said that once back in service the bridge will, as before, provide a north-to-south-only crossing for motor vehicles, and a two-way link for bicycles and pedestrians.

The rerouted No. 14 and No. 15 bus services will continue to bypass the bridge even after it reopens, it said.
