Bridge to open in May

THE main structure of the Rihui Port Bridge across the Huangpu River has been completed and the bridge is officially expected to open in May.

The Y-shaped bridge will connect the northern section of the riverside public space in Xuhui District and the Nanyuan Greenland in Huangpu District. The bridge will only serve pedestrians and bicycle riders, Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Workers will finish working on landscape projects on both sides of the river by April and the bridge will be open to the public on May 1.

The bridge will benefit those who were forced to take a detour for about a kilometer along the Jiangbin and Ruining roads to commute.

The construction of the bridge is part of city’s efforts to build a network of walking paths along the Huangpu River to enable residents and tourists to enjoy a leisurely walk or ride.

Huangpu District had announced in 2014 that it plans to build an 8.3-kilometer walking belt, connecting the Bund and other riverside public spaces.

There are also plans to build six such walking zones in People Square, on Nanjing Road E., around Sinan Road and Fuxing Road, and in Dapuqiao, Xintiandi and Yuyuan Garden areas.
