Bridge traffic problems

TRAFFIC was bumper-to-bumper heading south over the Wusong Road Watergate Bridge over Suzhou Creek yesterday morning - the first working day since traffic changes were made in the area.

The bridge has been closed to northbound traffic since the adjacent Waibaidu Bridge was reopened on Saturday. While cars flowed freely over the Waibaidu Bridge, traffic was held up by the extra traffic lights vehicles had to navigate when taking that route.

Traffic police advise drivers to avoid the area, especially during rush hours.

Police have set up instruction signs and reduced the timing of red lights in a bid to ease the congestion.

But many drivers are disobeying the traffic signs as they are not familiar with the new traffic pattern.

Police said that they would caution drivers this week before handing out penalties.

Meanwhile, 15-meter-long barriers have been erected on the southern approach to the Waibaidu Bridge to stop tourists walking on the roadway.

Tourists have walking on to the middle of the bridge to take photos since it was reopened on Saturday.
