Brighter later for the weekend

PLUM rain season torrential downpours are expected to continue today but the sun should reappear over the weekend, forecasters said yesterday.

Summer warmth has given way to heavy rain in recent days with temperatures pushed down to the mid 20s and mist hanging low over the city skyline.

However, the rain belt that has been dominating the city weather is likely to leave tomorrow and clearer skies return, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Drizzle is forecast for the first part of tomorrow before it clears up. Dry weather will last through Sunday with temperatures of 28 degrees Celsius.

However, rain is set to return on Monday and Tuesday.

The local flood prevention authorities said 70 of the city’s 490 observation stations recorded rainfall at “rainstorm” levels recently.

Areas heaviest hit were suburban districts and counties including Chongming, Jiading, Qingpu and Baoshan.

The bureau has warned of flooding in some low-lying areas.
