Broken pipe leaves 1,600 homes without gas

THOUSANDS of households suffered a gas outage for about 12 hours since 10pm yesterday when a gas pipe burst in a residential community in Minhang District.
Gas supply resumed by noon today after the problem was fixed.
More than 1,600 homes were affected with many unable to cook and take a shower.
Emergency workers said the accident was caused by ground subsidence and the pipe may also have been cracked by heavy vehicles passing above it. They ruled out yesterday's freezing temperature as the cause.
