Bund sees smooth flow of traffic
TRAFFIC around the once-congested Bund area has become smoother since a new traffic reorganization plan aimed at stopping tour buses and taxis from parking anywhere along the roads went into effect last Friday.
Violators who insist on unauthorized parking will be given warnings this week but they face fines after that, traffic police said.
The buses are now required to park in a large underground parking lot at the renovated Shiliupu Dock area, which offers about 700 berths. The main 2,000-meter-long riverside promenade is about 15 minutes walk from the parking space.
Previously many tour buses used to park near tourist sites and unload visitors to save time and parking fee, which caused the inevitable traffic snarl-up.
Yu Liren, a local driver, said he now spends about 10 minutes to cover a 1-kilometer stretch along the Bund while before it used to take him at least half an hour.
The city began a renovation project on the Bund in 2008, aimed at diverting traffic to the new underground tunnel while leaving the ground space mainly to tour and city buses and pedestrians.
