‘Bus Only’ lanes painted in red
THE bus-only lanes on Xizang Road S. have been painted in red — the city’s latest effort to deter motorists from using the space earmarked for public transportation and reduce road congestion.
The red bus lanes on Xizang Road S., starting from Beijing Road to Gaoxiong Road, cover a total of 4.5 kilometers on both sides of the road.
Signs of “Bus Only, 7-10, 16-19” painted in white on the dark red lanes — with signboards above — to deter vehicles from using the bus lanes during rush hours from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm every day, including weekends.
Authorities have also put up more surveillance cameras and those caught violating will be fined for 50 yuan (US$7.8).
“I think the paint is a strong reminder, warning me not to drive on the bus lane,” a driver, Peter Qing, told Shanghai Daily yesterday. “When I am in a hurry, I tend to drive on the bus-only lanes accidentally as it looks similar to ordinary lanes and are less occupied,” Qing said.
