Buses to help ease congestion on Metro
TWO bus routes are to be opened to ease congestion on two subway lines during rush hour. The buses will follow Metro Lines 6 and 8, stopping at the same subway stations.
"The routes will start soon," said Sun Jianping, director of the city's transport and port bureau, when responding to proposals raised by the CPPCC's Shanghai Committee to open the routes on Sunday.
But he did not give a timetable.
Sun said the new bus routes are expected to operate from 7am to 9pm and 5pm to 7pm. Tickets will be 2 yuan (29 US cents).
One route will go from Boxing Road Station to Century Avenue Station along Line 6 with eight stops. The other will start from Quyang Road Station and end at People's Square Station along Line 8 with six stops.
Commuters have long complained about overcrowding on the lines and things get worse when there are breakdowns.
Yesterday, signal glitches hit Line 8 at 2:55pm and affected trains between Shiguang Road Station and Yanji Road M. Station. Full services did not resume until 3:30pm.
Shanghai Shentong Group, the subway operator, said daily passenger turnover on Line 8 had reached 430,000, a 43 percent increase compared to the first six months of 2009. Line 6 had seen a 16 percent rise in passenger numbers.
