Cabbie fight jams Pudong airport
CITY cabbies clashed with taxi dispatchers at Pudong International Airport over a queue dispute yesterday.
The fight happened about 4pm at a parking lot after one cabbie suspected the dispatchers sold the queue tickets to some other taxi drivers, letting them jump the line.
The driver was injured in the head and was taken to a hospital for treatment, traffic authorities said. Other cabbies gathered to see the fight, jamming the parking entrance. Witnesses said traffic around the airport jammed up due to the dispute when night fell.
The airport operator soon arranged for taxis to leave the parking place and go directly to pick up passengers.
The quarrel and fight exposed a long-time problem and secret practice between the dispatchers and cabbies at the airport. Cabbies do not have to line up again if they can return to the airport in certain time, a measure to encourage drivers to take short-distance trips.
But dispatchers are usually from certain taxi companies, entrusted by city traffic administration, and are accused of favorable treatment.
