Call for Metro escape passages

METRO passengers have called on subway authorities to build emergency escape passages, after they were stranded in darkened carriages for an hour and then had to trek along a tunnel for 30 minutes to safety.

More than 200 passengers, led by Metro staff, took an unplanned hike after a Line 11 train broke down on Sunday afternoon.

City Metro operator, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, said the evacuation - the second in a just over year - "went smoothly and did not cause panic among passengers."

However, some stranded travelers did not agree. Passenger Yao Chenwei said on a popular online subway forum that they endured "a trek."

The accident happened about 3:20pm when the train was riding toward its terminal in suburban Jiading District.

It had just left Line 11's Shanghai Circuit Station when it broke down, passengers said. "Suddenly the train stopped and the lights in the carriages began flickering," said Yao.

Sparks were visible outside the train, added Yao.

Passengers waited in the gloomy carriages while Metro staff attempted to restart the train.

They evacuated through an emergency door at the front of the train about 4:25pm, Yao said.

Passengers walked along the tunnel for about 30 minutes before reaching the nearest station, where they boarded another train.

The Metro operator said the breakdown was caused by power glitch.

The emergency evacuation was conducted after workers were unable to repair the train quickly, said the operator.

A similar incident occurred on the Metro last December, when thousands of passengers were stranded for almost an entire morning after a Line 1 hit an empty train.

That accident led to criticism of the operator's slow reaction to the situation and the lack of emergency facilities.
