Car accident injures 1

AN inexperienced driver has been fined and deducted points after she ran a red light in Changning District and crashed into a scooter, moped and bicycle, injuring one person, traffic police said yesterday.

Police said the driver, a woman in her 30s, ran a red light at the intersection of Wuyi Road and Dingxi Road when she took her eyes off the road to pick up a road navigator.

"I was in total panic when I raised my head and saw my car was in the middle of the moving traffic," said the driver, surnamed Li of Liaoning Province.

The accident happened on July 1. The car first hit a moped and then crashed into the opposite lane, knocking down a moving scooter and a bicycle.

A woman sitting on the moped's back seat broke her ribs in the accident. The cyclist and scooter driver were not hurt, police said.

The car then crashed onto the sidewalk and came to a stop after knocking down a road sign.

Police ruled that Li should bear full responsibility for the accident.

She was fined 200 yuan (US$29.48) and lost three points on her license, police said. A drivers will have their license suspended if they lose all 12 points.

She also needs to pay for the injured woman's hospital bills.

Li had only been licensed to drive for one month.
