Car crashes into Huaihai Road shop, injures 1

A speeding Mercedes-Benz sedan ran onto the sidewalk and smashed the shop window of a H&M outlet on downtown Huaihai Road M. last night, severely injuring a pedestrian.

Police said the crash happened at about 10:20pm near the intersection of Huaihai Road and Si'nan Road. They had detained the driver and tests showed he was not driving under the influence of alcohol or drug.

The pedestrian was severely wounded but his condition has stabilized. Police are now investigating the cause of the accident.

Witnesses said the black sedan was driving at a high speed and lost control when it tried to avoid a taxi that was making a left turn.

The sedan rode onto the sidewalk, knocking down the pedestrian and smashing the H&M shop window, the witnesses added.

The Shanghai-plated sedan then stopped and its front badly damaged with both air bags inflated. Rescuers pulled the victim from under the car and rushed him to a nearby hospital.

The driver, a young man, told the police that he didn't have the driving license with him -- a violation that could bring him an accusation of "driving without license."
