Car with fake plate found when twin parks beside it
SHANGHAI police are looking for the owner of a vehicle which appeared to have a fake license plate.
On Saturday, a man parked his Range Rover in an underground garage in Xintiandi, Huangpu District, only to find a nearly identical vehicle - with the same plate - parked in the next space.
The wide-eyed driver called police, who impounded his vehicle's illegitimate twin.
The city this week is starting a two-month campaign against fake car plates and licenses. This year, police said, more than 3,600 fake plates and licenses have been seized in the city.
"It is a common trick to fake car plates similar to the licensed ones of the same models," said an officer, surnamed Li, with Shanghai traffic police. The plates are usually bought at illegal markets, police said.
Some drivers use a fake plate with the same number as a real one to avoid punishment from traffic violations, Li said. After some owners of legal plates were cited in such cases, policy was changed in August. After verifying and checking the cases, police will erase the penalties for victims.
Some use fakes to hide smuggled cars, police said.
