Central lanes will see Shanghai buses ‘run like Metro trains’

SHANGHAI buses will be able to run “like Metro trains” on a new major thoroughfare, with their own lanes in the center of the road.

Work is due to start soon on the east-to-west Beiheng Passage, which will stretch 19.4 kilometers, linking Changning, Jing’an, Putuo, Zhabei, Hongkou and Yangpu districts.

This will be the first time the city has reserved the center of a road for buses.

The road surface will be painted a different color and barriers set up to ensure other vehicles don’t stray into the bus lane.

Bus drivers welcomed the central lanes initiative.

“It’s a good idea as we’ll be able to drive our buses like a Metro trains,” said driver Liu Bin.

Bus stops will also be located in an area between the bus lanes in the central zone.

“The bus stops will be close to crossings to enable passengers to reach either side of the passage conveniently,” said Xiao Hui, director of urban planning department of the Shanghai Transport Commission.

The 10 kilometers of bus lanes will start at Hengfeng Road in Zhabei District and end at Neijiang Road in Yangpu District, with stops every 800 meters on average.

“We will try to set the bus stops close to Metro stations of lines 1, 4, 8 and 10 to improve links between the public bus system and the subway network,” Xiao said.

Shanghai’s existing bus lanes are usually next to the sidewalk for access to stops.

However, private cars, especially taxis picking up passengers, are likely to occupy these lanes during rush hour, slowing buses.
