Chamber pots vanishing

AN important focus to achieve the city's goal of "one public toilet every 250 meters" lies deep in the lanes of old residential communities, where households don't own their private toilets.

Residents in some old buildings still rely on chamber pots. Some choose to empty them by themselves every day, or hire someone.

Shanghai's official history notes: "There were about 856,900 chamber pots in downtown before 1972."

According to the city sanitation authority, stool dump stands linked to the sewer system still serve about 360,000 households citywide, though they are vanishing quickly.
