Check-in will cost more

HOTEL prices in May will jump about 30 percent in Shanghai because of the 2010 World Expo, but rates will drop back in June and July, tourism insiders said yesterday.

Officials said three to four star hotels and economy hotels will be in demand during the Expo, but five-star hotels will be less heavily booked.

That's because most of the Expo visitors will be from the Chinese mainland, and therefore not likely to choose luxurious hotels, unless offered a favorable price, said the HRS.cn, a hotel booking Website.

Shanghai CYTS Tours agreed, saying hotel prices will rise in May and October and drop at other times.

"According to the official prediction, the visit volume of May and October will reach the peak during the Expo," said Wang Zhiwei, the company's deputy general manager. "Thus during the period, we don't expect the hotel price to fall."

Tour agencies and Websites said the meetings and conferences market in Shanghai may slow down during the Expo.
