Chilly winds from north to clear pollution

A NEW cold front heading into the city from the north will see temperatures fall steadily over the next couple of days, forecasters said yesterday.

Today’s low will be 6 degrees Celsius, while tomorrow it will be even colder at 4 degrees and could drop below zero in some suburban areas, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

The good news is that the weather front will help to improve air quality in the city, which was poor yesterday. At 7pm last night, the air quality index stood at 142 with the concentration of PM2.5 particles reaching 107 micrograms per cubic meter, more than four times the World Health Organization’s safe level of 25.

“While the cold air coming from north China brought much of the pollution into the city, as the winds pick up, they will help to disperse pollutants and the air quality will improve,” said Man Liping, a chief service officer at the bureau.

The coming days will be mostly dry, though more rain is expected at the weekend, the forecaster said.
