Christmas cheer as winds to clear smog

HOLIDAY cheer is upon us as the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau is predicting some respite from the smoggy weather on Christmas Day.

The bureau said winds and a dip in temperature will produce a weak cold front that will clear the smog.

Poor air condition marked Christmas Eve in the city with the mercury rising under a stable weather pattern. Smog developed as the northwesterly winds, which brought the particles from the north, were not strong enough to drive them away.

The air quality index peaked at 214 at 11am with the concentration of chief pollutant PM2.5 topping 160 micrograms per cubic meter — six times the safe level of 25 set by the World Health Organization.

The heavily polluted condition eased slightly in the afternoon after weak cold air brought in the winds. At 5pm, the AQI dropped to 129 with the PM2.5 density tapering below 100 micrograms. But it still in the moderately polluted level.

It will be a bit colder today with the mercury fluctuating between 5 and 9 degrees Celsius. It will be cloudy and the skies will turn dark later.

Friday is likely to be overcast with not much change in temperatures.

The dry condition will last through Saturday when skies will turn bright in the morning. Saturday’s high will return to the low teens with a low of 7 degrees.
