City adds mist sprayers despite mixed reviews

Mist sprayers are being added to more busy downtown venues in Shanghai in an effort to cool people down during the hot summer months.

But some don't make much of a difference, drawing complaints from the public who urged urban planners to do a better job when introducing the sprayers.

Only two small sprayers were working yesterday at noon on the Bund promenade, one of the city's most famous attractions.

Some tourists complained that the two mist sprayers did not cool them down given their limited number and capacity.

"The spray area is too small. And the water is too little. We don't feel cooler standing beside it," said a tourist, surnamed Hu, from Shandong Province.

She urged the Bund's management authority to make the sprayer's more powerful.

The city started using the sprayers during the 2010 World Expo. The mist sprays helped drop the temperature by about 5 degrees Celsius under shades as people waited to enter pavilions at the Expo site.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport introduced mist sprayers this summer where people queue for taxis outside Terminal 2. A Shanghai Daily reporter found the sprayers helped lower the temperature by several degrees and this was welcomed by people waiting for cabs.

The mist sprayers have also been opened at other popular attractions including Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Yuyuan Garden.

"We open all the mist sprayers along the zig-zag bridge once the temperature rises above 33 degrees Celsius," said Wang Jinghua, an official with the garden's management office.

A tourist, surnamed Xu, from Guangdong Province, said: "You can feel the difference when you stop on the bridge to take photos."

Visitors waiting to enter Oriental Pearl TV Tower could also get some relief from the heat under the mist sprayers near the entrance.

Residential compounds at Siping Neighborhood, Yangpu District, are also introducing the sprayers. The idea was tested last summer and a good response from residents encouraged the neighborhood authority to continue the program this summer.

But not all trials ended successfully. The city's Metro operator told Shanghai Daily they had decided to drop a previous plan to introduce the mist sprayers on platforms at elevated subway stops after their experimental trial at Line 1's Hulan Road Station proved unsuccessful last summer.
