City airports under weather alert as shower already delays over 50 flights

OVER 50 flights were delayed at Shanghai’s Hongqiao and Pudong airports while several local roads were flooded due to a heavy shower hitting the city in the afternoon, the airport and flood prevention authorities said today.

The Air Traffic Management Bureau issued an orange alert for both airports from noon through 6pm in the afternoon because of heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunder.

It predicts that the takeoff and landing capacity of Shanghai’s two airports would be reduced by half throughout the day.

The situation was improved around 2pm as all the delayed aircraft took off at the Pudong airport but over 50 were still delayed at Hongqiao which is more severely affected by the inclement weather, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

The heavy rainfall mainly hit the city’s Minhang, Xuhui and Fengxian districts. The areas near Pingyang and Lianhua roads recorded the heaviest rainfall of over 120 millimeters. Over 85 millimeters of rainfall dropped to Tianlin Road area in downtown Xuhui District, according to the Shanghai Flood Control Headquarters.

Four major roads in Songjiang, Minhang districts and Pudong New Area were flooded due to the sudden and heavy rainfall, said Zhang Zhenyu, deputy director of the headquarters.

A tunnel near the Chunshen Road in Minhang was flooded with accumulated water of 38 centimeters deep, according to the headquarters.

Another low-lying road on Luoshan and Xinduo roads in Pudong had 29 centimeters deep of accumulated rainwater.

Most of the accumulated water on the roads and tunnel was drained by 2pm, said Zhang.
