City areas to get separate forecasts
SEPARATE temperature forecasts for popular areas are planned by the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau this year.
This summer, the respective temperatures in the People's Square, Xujiahui and Lujiazui will be given in weather forecasts, following a similar scheme at last year's World Expo site.
The "heat island" effect is increasingly obvious in Shanghai due to urbanization, said Ding Ruoyang, director of the forecast department of the bureau.
This sees temperature variations between different areas, depending on the density and type of buildings.
Meanwhile, the bureau had distributed 1,000 specially-made radios to companies, schools and residential areas. These search a unique channel for disaster alerts.
Today is forecast sunny to cloudy with a low of 1 degree Celsius and a high of 5 degrees. Sleet is forecast tomorrow with temperatures between 1 and 6 degrees.
