City awaits approval of another Metro line

SHANGHAI is considering building another subway route, Metro Line 14, to connect suburban Jiading District to the Pudong New Area, the city's traffic planner said over the weekend.

The city is waiting for approval from state authorities.

If the project is approved, construction work will be finished in five or six years.

Chen Bizhuang, deputy director with the local integrated traffic planning and research institute, said that the new line "would also ease the heavy pressure on Metro Line 2 to a large extent."

According to a planning draft, Line 14 will run from Jiading's Jiangqiao area, with a connection to Line 2 at the Jing'an Temple Station, then run parallel to Line 2 in the city's downtown area before ending at Pudong's Jinqiao, a major export processing zone.

Lines 12 and 13 and an extension to Line 11 are already under construction.
