City beach to close after bathers lose their cool

JINSHAN City Beach is to close just days after opening, following disturbances and vandalism at the weekend.

While the artificial beach, which opened on July 29, has a capacity for 8,000 people, 30,000 turned up on Saturday, followed by 38,000 on Sunday.

This led to long queues in the scorching heat outside, with reports of fences being damaged and beachgoers trying to force their way past a police cordon.

Inside, there were reports of showers and lockers being damaged, and bathers swimming outside designated areas.

Yesterday, operator of the Shanghai Xiahaiqu City Beach Management Co announced that the 470,000-square-meter attraction will close on Friday.

Last weekend’s big crowds led to overcrowding and maintenance and checks are now required, it said.

It is thought that this will include repairs to the shower area and fences.

Shanghai Xiahaiqu also claimed that as thunderstorms are expected in Jinshan over the weekend, due to the influence of Super Typhoon Soudelor, its decision is also based on safety concerns.

It did not say when the beach will reopen.

This second phase of the Jinshan beach attraction, featuring a swimming area, a watersports zone and a wetland, is much bigger than the original Jinshan City Beach — which closed when the new one opened.

Shanghai Xiahaiqu had said that the new bigger beach would mean less crowding and a more comfortable environment for beachgoers.

But on its first weekend open, as temperatures hit 38 degrees Celsius, the free attraction proved a bit too popular.

When the capacity of 8,000 was neared, staff slowed down admissions until some bathers left, leaving thousands queuing outside.

It finally closed its gates altogether at 4pm on Sunday as the number reached 8,000.

The large crowds and queues led to “uncivilized behavior,” thepaper.cn reported, citing the operator.

As queues formed at the showers, faucets, stools and lockers were broken, it reported.

Meanwhile in the water, some tourists ignored warnings and swam outside the swimming area, posing safety risks.

An investigation is under way, said officials.
