City blanketed in fog again, flights delayed

HEAVY fog engulfed Shanghai again this morning and largely impacted the flights of the city's two civil airports.

The fog today was even stronger than yesterday's, according to Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The bureau issued a yellow fog alert last night and upgraded it to red at 3:16am, which is the highest of the three-level system, warning the visibility to be limited to 50 meters.

The alert was lifted at 7:16am when the fog started to clear with the temperature rising.

About 3,000 passengers were stranded in Pudong International Airport as four flights were cancelled, over 20 delayed and 11 landed in Hongqiao Airport and other provinces.

The authorities said some international flights had to circle above the airport until 9am, said Pudong frontier authority.

The situation was better in Hongqiao Airport, according to Hongqiao frontier authority.

About 10 flights were delayed this morning and not many passengers were stranded, official said and pointed that the fog in Hongqiao area was not as heavy as that in Pudong.
