City braces for festival traffic jam
THE city’s expressways and road traffic will be tested by heavy vehicle load a week before the Chinese New Year, which falls on January 31.
Shanghai’s traffic authorities are urging car owners to avoid the expressways from 5pm to 8pm between January 24 and 30. They suggested that road traffic is a better option to beat the congestion.
Expressways S20, S4, G50, Xinzhuang and Huqingping interchanges, as well as Humin and Yan’an elevated roads are expected to be chock-a-block with traffic.
The city’s highways and the Donghai Bridge will let in seven-seater vehicles for free from midnight of January 31 to February 6.
The traffic authorities have predicted a 15 percent increase in traffic load during this year’s Spring Festival compared to last year.
About 2.3 million vehicles will use the expressways within the city every day for a week before the festival, while the interprovincial highway network is likely to see about 900,000 vehicles plying every day.
