City braces up for peak travel season
SHANGHAI traffic authority advised local residents to travel less if possible when the Spring Festival mass migration peaks from January 18 to 22 and from January 30 to February 22.
The millions of people will rush home to spend the Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival, with their families, putting a great pressure on traffic system. The volume of travelers is expected to hike from January 8 and the peak season will last until February 16.
Jiang Shujie, a Shanghai Construction Commission official, said the traffic authorities estimated that 29.33 million people will travel by rail, air and road, and 15.56 million will travel within the city, up 6 percent and 2 percent from last year.
The authorities plan to make full use of the city's new transport facilities to cope with the surging tide of travelers and add more buses to shuttle between stations. Safety inspection will be intensified as well, Jiang said.
