City flies high on Internet speed
Shanghai’s Internet speed, previously labeled “fake broadband” because of its slow speed, topped a nationwide survey for 2013, a top Internet service provider said.
The average speed in Shanghai touched 5.4 megabits per second (MB/s) last year, followed by Beijing’s 4.17 MB/s and Fujian Province’s 3.93 MB/s in a national Internet ranking list, ChinaCache said yesterday.
Nasdaq-listed ChinaCache offers CDN (content delivery network) services in 120 cities in China with 12,000 services, which makes its data reliable on real Internet speed in the Chinese mainland.
“I love the feeling of fast broadband network,” said Li Kai, a local IT engineer who lives in Xujiahui and subscribes to China Telecom’s package of 100 Mbps (megabytes per second). “I can download a film in minutes and a song in seconds.”
Like Li, many local residents watch online video directly on TV through set-top box and improved Internet speed with a peak speed up to 10 MB/s. “It’s a new lifestyle. I can watch TV anytime I want,” Li added.
In 2010, a Beijing-based research firm said Shanghai had the nation’s slowest broadband network, prompting it to be labeled a “fake broadband” service. Since then, China Telecom’s Shanghai branch has invested heavily on upgrading its local network. It is now offering up to 100 Mbps package — 10 to 25 times higher than three years ago.
More than 45,000 Shanghai families have subscribed to broadband of 50 Mbps or above, according to Shanghai Telecom. Nationally, China’s Internet speed reached 3.54 MB/s in 2013, according to ChinaCache.
By 2020, China’s average broadband bandwidth will jump to 20 Mbps compared to about 4 Mbps in 2012, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
