City getting cleaner air, chilly mornings
SHANGHAI'S air quality returned to good levels yesterday as heavy winds have blown pollutants away, authorities said.
The air quality index (AQI) dropped to 82 by 6pm yesterday, the second-best level, from the historical high at 254 on Wednesday evening, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.
With the departure of air pollutants, the sky, hazy since Monday, also started to clear yesterday and visibility returned to normal, said the Shanghai Observatory.
"With the influence of the cold, the haze was dispersed and the visibility across the city returned above 10 kilometers in the morning," said Fu Yi, a chief service officer of the observatory. Meanwhile, Fu also reminded locals to keep warm as the mercury should drop to freezing today and tomorrow mornings.
Under the influence of high atmospheric pressure, the city should be mostly sunny today and tomorrow.
The low this morning should reach minus 1 degree Celsius while the high should climb to 6 degrees. Temperatures in the suburbs usually drop even lower in the morning, Fu said.
The mercury tomorrow should rise a little from a low of 0 degrees Celsius to a high of 9 degrees.
The city should warm up and turn drizzly as of Sunday, when the low is forecast to be 5 degrees and the high 10 degrees, due to a warm, wet air current.
