City has cool idea for water pipes
WATER pipes freezing and bursting during January’s cold snap, the worst to hit the city in 35 years, caused much hardship for residents who were unable to bath or wash clothes.
To help minimize the problem in future, the Shanghai Water Authority yesterday raised the standard for cold resistance, stipulating that pipes must continue to function when the mercury drops below minus 10.1 degrees Celsius, increasing the previous resistance standard of minus 5 degrees.
Exposed pipes, valves and meters in residential buildings must now be properly insulated and protected with non-toxic, odorless, fireproof and waterproof material that can last for 12 years. The material near the valves must be removable for regular inspections and maintenance.
The new standard also stipulates that water meters must be housed in a cold-resistant box and rooftop water tanks must be insulated.
The insulation and protective material will be installed during ongoing residential water pipe improvement projects across the city, said Bai Tinghui, director of the authority.
The city’s water supply hotline received over 20,000 calls from residents complaining about frozen or burst pipes within a week in later January, when the mercury dropped to minus 7 degrees, according to Shanghai Chengtou Group, the city’s major water operator.
