City highways to crawl during Qingming Festival

SHANGHAI police have pledged more patrols to block non-local vehicles from entering the city's congested elevated highways, but peak travel season is coming again as families pour out for the Qingming Festival on April 5.

During the festival, the Shanghai-Nanjing and Shanghai-Jiaxing highways will be jammed with cars and buses as people make their annual visit to family tombs, said Zhu Hao, deputy chief engineer with the Shanghai Traffic Planning Institute, today.

Drivers should avoid using these highways during the last two weeks of March, Zhu said, adding that some main roads near the city's northeast Wujiaochang area would be close for renovation later this month.

The trial run of the Oriental Sports Center in Pudong is also likely to add pressure to Jiyang Road, Middle Ring Road and the Lupu Bridge over the Huangpu River.

The new stadium will officially open in July for the FINA World Champions, an international swimming competition. Police may impose traffic restrictions in the area during the stadium's test run later this month, according to traffic authorities.
