City issues red hot alert
SHANGHAI weather bureau issued its highest heat alert at 1:20pm today as mercury climbed towards 40 degrees Celsius.
Shanghai Meteorological Bureau for the first time in seven years gave out a 40-degree Celsius temperature forecast today.
This will be the third hottest summer the city has had since local weather record was made 138 years ago, following the 40.2 degrees in 1934 and 40 degrees last year.
The bureau issued an orange alert, the second of a three-tier heat warning system at 8:05am.
Xujiahui weather station forecasted the temperature to reach 38.4 degrees Celsius at 11am and peak at noon.
Pudong area reported 40 degrees yesterday and issued a red alert, the highest level of the heat warning system.
