City may have white Christmas
SHANGHAI may have a white Christmas, as snow expected overnight may still be lying in the morning, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
Sleet and snow are forecast for today, with temperatures ranging between a low of 3 degrees Celsius and a high of 6 degrees. Tomorrow should also see sleet, with a low of zero degree and a high of 4, weathermen said.
Winds should also be stronger today and tomorrow averaging 61 kilometers per hour, which means better air quality today after the city experienced four slightly polluted days in a row, said the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau.
Today's air quality is expected to be good, second in a five-level scale.
The recent hazy and foggy days have worried the public, especially after Shi Yuzhu, a famous businessman, said on his weibo - China's equivalent to Twitter - that breathing air in Shanghai on a normal day is the equivalent of smoking nine cigarettes a day and 20 cigarettes on hazy days. He said tests by a traveling companion found the air quality in Lijiang of Yunnan Province on a normal day is the same as smoking one cigarette per day, while in Beijing it is the equivalent of 21 cigarettes.
Local experts said it isn't accurate to compare breathing air on hazy days with smoking cigarettes.
Shanghai has had eight days with slight pollution this month. December usually has six to nine polluted days.
Temperatures may hit minus 1 on Sunday, then increase next week.
