City records hottest day of the year

THE mercury touched 36.1 degrees Celsius in Shanghai yesterday to make it the hottest day of the year, the weather forecasters said.
The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow alert, the third of the four-tier alert system, for the sizzling temperature at 11:37am. Most of the downtown areas and Songjiang District recorded temperatures above 35 degrees. The Xujiahui weather station recorded the highest at 36.1 degrees.
Due to the impact of a subtropical high, the temperature rose quickly and residents felt hot and stuffy with high humidity, the bureau said.
It issued another yellow alert for thunder and lightning at 2:10pm and predicated showers and thunderstorms in parts of the city. The rains could reach 40 millimeters per hour in some areas with thunder and gale.
The temperature will drop to a high of 25 to 30 degrees today with some showers. It will turn cloudy tomorrow and on Monday. The rains will hit the city again from Tuesday.
The air quality will be good during the weekend, though PM2.5 will still be the major pollutant.
