City swelters on hottest day of this year as mercury touches 39.1 degrees

TODAY was recorded as the hottest day so far this year after the mercury touched 39.1 degrees Celsius, triggering the second orange heat-wave alert, forecasts said.

The mercury soared quickly since the morning and the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued this year's second orange alert for heat wave at 8:40am to warn local residents that the high is expected to exceed 38 degrees in most parts of the city.

By 2:20pm, most districts saw their temperatures range from 37 to 39 degrees and a few monitoring stations recorded a high of 40 degrees.

According to the weather bureau, Shanghai is expected to relieve a bit from the scorching weather next week after the subtropical high moves southwards for a while.

It was earlier estimated that the number of Shanghai's high temperature days -- days with a high of over 35 degrees -- this summer will be 14 to 21. Last summer we had 12 such days. The number of days with a high of up 37 degrees is expected to be 4 to 7. And the maximum temperature can reach 39 to 40 degrees.
