City to bake in weekend heat wave

A HEAT wave will continue to grip the city for the next three days with daily temperatures hovering around 37 degrees Celsius, weathermen said.

The heat will last through the weekend and continue early next week with the mercury forecast to reach 36 degrees on Monday and 35 degrees on Tuesday, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The low temperature in the next five days will be 29 degrees.

With high humidity levels, thunderstorms are possible in some parts of the city, the bureau said.

Yesterday the city issued a yellow heat alert - the lowest level of a three-tier warning system - with the high reaching 35.4 degrees in Xujiahui area. It was the third day in succession with the temperature above 35 degrees.

There have been nine hot days with a temperature above 35 degrees so far this summer.
